There are many reasons why someone might want to do affirmations. Maybe you want to shift your self-image, or you might want to undo all the negative things said to you growing up that you may have internalized. From experience, affirmations work whether you believe them or not. Think of it like this: if someone came and said to you “you are stupid” every day, you will eventually start to say to yourself “maybe I am stupid.” The continuous exposure to the idea results in your mind finding evidence why this is true. Unless you are consciously resisting the idea, you might end up believing it. The good thing is that you can tell yourself all the things you want to train your mind to believe. At first it will sound like lip service but eventually you will notice changes in your thinking and the way you carry yourself.

Things to remember when doing affirmations

You have to do them every day. In the case where you want to undo harmful things that were said to you, remember it took a long time to instill those beliefs into your head, it’s going to take a long time to undo them. We often do not know how deeply entrenched something is in our subconscious mind. You want to do your affirmations until it becomes a subconscious belief. Now here is something that people overlook – when you do affirmations, you also have to disassociate from environments and people that want to convince you the opposite of your affirmation. Let’s say you are working to be less negative and pessimistic; it won’t help you to say affirmations in your bathroom mirror and then go hangout with Betsy who will be saying negative things. The mind wants to conform because we are naturally wired to behave in a way that creates a sense of belonging. Every time you do your affirmations and go back to environments that convince you otherwise, you are taking 2 steps forward and 1 step back.

Question of the day:

  • Are there any beliefs that I would like to change?
