I have seen several quotes online reminding people that they aren’t the main character in everyone’s story. This makes sense as each person is entitled to who they prioritize in their lives. However, a question I have for you is, are you the main character in your own story? Do you feel in control of your life? Are you giving yourself the power to dictate the things that are within your control?

It’s so easy to blame everything on someone and something. Whilst there are things that are not in your control such as people’s behavior towards you, are you taking the time to manage the things that are within your control? These can include how you allow other people’s behavior to affect you, how long you spend thinking and talking about it, and what emotions you allow the behavior to arouse in you.

Your mental orchestra

I think of it this way – you are the only person with access to your mind. Nobody else does. Those people who claim to read minds can say what they want, but you are the only one present in your head. It means everything that happens in there is your orchestra and you conduct it. If you decide to play the cello all day and ignore all the other instruments, that is your call. If Bob next door only uses guitars and piano and you decide to copy or allow some external person to tell you how to conduct your orchestra, you are not really the main character. This does not mean you need to ignore people’s advice, but make sure that whatever you listen to aligns with what you want for your life.

Question of the day:

  • Is the life I am living, the life I want?
  • Am I conducting my own orchestra or am I giving outside winds more power than I should?
