I like to observe people who have achieved my goals and aspirations in the past to learn from them. Through reading memoirs and books on life, I have realized that all these people have one thing in common – belief in themselves. Every person in this universe has encountered someone who doubted them or told them what they wanted to do will not succeed. In fact, a person will encounter more doubtful people than ones that believe in them. As a result, one must guard belief in oneself jealously.

Why do I think this is important?

Have you ever had a situation in which you thought of doing something but came up with an excuse why it will not work? Or you thought to yourself, I am not qualified or experienced enough. And then maybe a year later, a circumstance forces you in doing that thing you believed you wouldn’t succeed at. And in that moment, you realize there was no reason to doubt yourself from the beginning. Circumstance or no circumstance, you would have been able to do it. What changed is the way you thought about the situation. What if you could ensure that anything thrown at you, you will commit to trying without doubting yourself? Imagine how rich your experience would be.

How to guard belief in yourself?

It’s important to pay attention to your social environment and its impact on your mindset. Friends and family are often well-meaning and want to protect us, but majority of the time, doubt comes from them. In fact, a stranger has a higher chance of believing in your big vision than someone who has known you your whole life. You therefore cannot always rely on other people to believe in you. Their belief should be a bonus to your own belief in yourself. Essentially your belief is what will determine whether you try something or not. And you can never know whether you would have succeeded at something without trying. By paying attention to your social environment, you become aware of what or who might be feeding you doubt, and you can limit your interactions. It’s also important to surround yourself with people who believe in themselves as they understand the importance of belief and it will rub off on you as well.

Question of the day:

  • Do I truly believe I have what it takes to get where I want to go? If not, how can I get to that point where I don’t doubt myself?
