April 25, 2022.

Have you ever felt drawn to a certain activity or environment and did not know why? Or felt like you were in your element and could not describe how and why? When I was young, I was the kind of child that would jump around when there was heavy rain. If there was thunder and lightning, it was a huge bonus for me. I would sit by the window and wait for the next lightning strike. Very crazy, I know! One of the things I miss most about Zimbabwe is the thunderstorms. I started reflecting on why I am so drawn to water and maybe you’ve had this same experience with something else. Keep reading to learn about finding your creative space.

Finding my creative space

One day I realized that I always seem to have creative ideas in the shower. I have written poems, solved mathematical problems, just from hearing the sound of water. The same thing happens to me when I am in a pool, and I am swimming nonstop for a while. I enter into this state in which I no longer feel my body and I start to see my thoughts in 3 dimensions all around me on a larger scale. It puts my mind in a state where I feel I can never lose. Why am I telling you this? Well, there is a place, or a thing that stimulates your creativity. Think back to when you were young. What sort of environment felt so soothing to you? For you it might be long drives, walking long distances, hiking, or gardening to name a few. There are so many things it could be.

Why should you care about that?

Creativity will not find you. You have a duty to yourself to find the environments where your mind thrives the most and to create those more often so you can be better at solving problems, creating work, etc. Most people assume they are not creative at all but actually, they just have not created a space where their mind can do that. What differs in people and makes some seem more creative than others is their ability to put their mind in that state in many environments. For some people its just in that one space whilst others can be creative in multiple situations. This is why it can seem like some people have creativity whilst others do not. By putting yourself in environments that stimulate your creativity more often, gradually you will notice that you will be able to activate your creativity in other spaces more easily.

Question of the day:

  • In what type of environment do I feel in my element?
