April 27, 2022.

You may have heard people say, “treat people like they are worth a [billion] dollars.” I prefer to say, everyone you meet is worth a billion dollars. There is a distinct difference between treating someone like they are worth a billion dollars and actually believing they are worth a billion dollars. Every human you will encounter has priceless intrinsic value and deserves to be treated as such. Even the people you do not like.

How perceiving someone’s value can change a situation

We live in a society where attention and presence are the scarcest resources. As humans we want to be seen and truly understood. Imagine a scenario in which you meet someone for the first time, and you truly believe this person is worth a billion dollars. You will be fully present and engage in conversation that is enriching for both of you. Now imagine that maybe that person does not get that from any of their relationships. You have just done one important thing that 20+ people in that person’s life failed to do. And guess what, that person’s life is changed. They will also automatically like you as a person and if that was a networking meeting, there is no doubt they will help you. Now, I am not saying treat people in this way so that you get what you want. No. I am only highlighting that getting what you want is an inevitable biproduct of giving humans attention and presence.

Why is this important?

When you make an effort to see people’s intrinsic value, you will approach the conversation with curiosity and openness. You are fully present to see the world in their eyes. You will soon realize that every human is very interesting and has a lot to offer to the world.

Question of the Day:

  • Do I see my own intrinsic value and the value of others?
